The Challenge
This Apollo Beach roofing project took place in Covington Park, an established residential community south of Big Bend Road where many homes were built during the early 2000s. This particular property dates to 2006, making it representative of the generation of homes in the neighborhood now reaching an age when original roofing components often require closer attention.
The existing roof had reached the point where continued Florida sun, seasonal thunderstorms, humidity, and repeated wind-driven rain had taken their toll. Areas around penetrations and roof transitions required particular attention, and once the old roofing materials were removed, the crew was able to evaluate the wood deck rather than simply covering over hidden conditions.
That timing mattered. The project was completed during Apollo Beach’s late-August rainy season. On August 25, the National Weather Service was forecasting temperatures near 90°F along with scattered afternoon thunderstorms — exactly the type of weather pattern that makes reliable underlayment, flashing, and water-shedding details especially important.
Scope of Work
Steadfast Roofing completed a full tear-off and rebuilt the roof system from the deck upward.
After removing the existing shingles and underlayment, the crew inspected the exposed decking and addressed localized areas that required repair before installation continued. The project photos document the roof deck carefully prepared before the new moisture-protection system was installed.
A RhinoRoof U20 synthetic underlayment was applied across the roof surface to create a consistent secondary water barrier. Particular attention was given to valleys, perimeter edges, roof-to-wall transitions, plumbing penetrations, and ventilation components.
The roof was finished with Owens Corning shingles in Aged Copper, a dimensional color blend that mixes warm brown, charcoal, copper, and muted earth tones. New white drip edge was incorporated along the perimeter, creating a clean transition between the roof and the home’s lighter fascia while helping direct water away from vulnerable deck edges.
Penetrations and vents were carefully integrated into the new system rather than treated as afterthoughts — an important detail on a roof exposed to Florida’s sudden heavy downpours.
The Result
The finished roof gives this Covington Park home a noticeably richer appearance. Instead of a flat, uniform roof surface, Aged Copper produces a layered blend of warm tones that works especially well with the stucco exterior and suburban Florida architecture found throughout this part of Apollo Beach.
From the final aerial photographs, the roof planes, hips, ridges, valleys, and penetrations read as one cohesive system. The dimensional shingle pattern adds depth without overwhelming the home, while the lighter perimeter detailing keeps the finished roof looking crisp.
The transformation is both visual and functional: updated curb appeal above a completely renewed weather-protection system.
Why This Project Matters
Covington Park is a tree-lined Apollo Beach community developed primarily from the early 2000s onward, with pools, parks, playgrounds, and other neighborhood recreation amenities.
It is also part of a coastal South Hillsborough environment shaped by Tampa Bay’s heat, humidity, heavy seasonal rainfall, and tropical weather. Apollo Beach Nature Preserve, located along Tampa Bay, even notes standing water as a common rainy-season condition in the area.
For homes here, replacing shingles is only part of the job. Deck condition, underlayment, flashing, penetrations, and edge protection all need to work together when the next strong storm arrives.
