Atlantic Blue Revival: A Mixed-Slope Roof Rebuild in Skyview Terrace

Project Snapshot

  • Neighborhood/City: Skyview Terrace, Pinellas Park
  • Property Type: Single-story mid-century Florida ranch with a mixed-slope roof, attached carport, and rear additions
  • Roof System/Materials Used: IKO architectural shingles in Atlantic Blue, synthetic underlayment, white metal drip edge, repaired wood decking, renewed pipe boots and flashing, and a dedicated low-slope membrane assembly

The Challenge

This Skyview Terrace home had a roofline typical of an older Pinellas Park property that had grown over time: pitched sections over the original living space connected to broad, low-slope areas above later additions. From the ground, the biggest warning signs were faded shingles, worn edges, patched membrane seams, and weathered penetrations. Inside, the homeowner had noticed intermittent staining and a musty odor near a rear room after prolonged rain—symptoms consistent with moisture entering where the steep- and low-slope systems met.

The tear-off revealed the real extent of the problem. Several sections of the original plank decking were split, softened, or visibly deteriorated, with the heaviest damage near transitions and perimeter areas. Those concealed weaknesses were especially concerning at the start of West Central Florida’s rainy season, when heavy rainfall, damaging wind, hail, and frequent lightning become more likely. The project wrapped on June 9; the very next week, a tropical moisture event brought several rounds of significant rain and localized flooding across the region.

Scope of Work

Steadfast Roofing completed a full tear-off across both the shingle and low-slope portions of the property. The crew protected the landscaping, paved side areas, and exterior walls before removing the brittle shingles, aged roll roofing, and compromised underlayment.

Once the deck was exposed, damaged planks and weakened sections were removed and rebuilt with sound wood and new sheathing. This was a structural reset, not a cosmetic overlay. A continuous synthetic underlayment was installed over the prepared steep-slope deck, while a compatible membrane system was used on the flatter sections where conventional shingles would not provide dependable drainage.

White metal drip edge was fitted around the roof perimeter for a clean finish and controlled water shedding. Steadfast Roofing also renewed plumbing-vent boots, sealed penetrations, and carefully flashed the transitions between the different roof elevations. The pitched planes were finished with IKO architectural shingles in Atlantic Blue, laid in straight courses and completed with coordinated hip-and-ridge caps.

The Result

The finished roof gives the home a striking blue-charcoal profile that feels both modern and appropriate for the neighborhood. Atlantic Blue adds depth and movement across the larger roof planes, while the white drip edge creates a crisp outline against the home’s warm exterior and light trim.

Aerial photographs show a much more unified system: even shingle exposure, clean ridge lines, securely finished penetrations, and orderly connections to the low-slope sections. What had looked like a collection of aging additions now reads as one deliberate, professionally integrated roof.

Why This Project Matters

Skyview Terrace is a close-knit residential pocket of Pinellas Park, and this home sits near Skyview Terrace Park, a small neighborhood gathering place with playground equipment, a shaded shelter, and a picnic table. The surrounding streets are lined with compact ranch homes, mature trees, carports, and practical additions—features that make correct flashing and mixed-slope roofing especially important.

Pinellas County occupies a narrow peninsula bordered by Tampa Bay and the Gulf, so even inland neighborhoods remain exposed to humid marine air and fast-changing tropical weather. A durable roof here depends on the entire assembly: sound decking, continuous underlayment, secure edge metal, sealed penetrations, and the right material for every slope.
